A generator gives you more watts than a battery bank ever will, but it is loud, it needs fuel, and it can fail exactly when the cold makes it least forgiving.

If you are staring down a winter freeze specifically, skip the pull-cord roulette. Lean on a propane heater rated for indoor use, run real carbon monoxide detectors, and charge your battery bank before the front ever arrives, not after. The first hour of any outage decides more than people expect based on what you check first, what you plug in, and what you leave alone. Getting that sequence right matters more in a freeze than it ever did in a hurricane.

We are not chasing full independence from the grid, just enough of a buffer to get through the worst week of the year without losing the fridge, the insulin, or a client deadline. That is the whole plan, and it took two bad winters to get it right.
